About HomeRepairCosts
FixHomeCosts was founded with a simple mission: give homeowners honest, data-backed cost estimates so they never get overcharged for home repairs again.
Unlike other cost estimate sites that rely on user-submitted data or outdated surveys, we pull our pricing information directly from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and Census Bureau. Every number you see on this site is traceable to a public government data source.
Our Founder
Why We Built This
After 15+ years in the trades, Alex noticed a pattern: homeowners consistently overpaid for services because they had no reliable way to know what fair pricing looked like in their area. Existing "cost estimator" sites were often funded by contractor lead-gen companies with an incentive to inflate prices.
HomeRepairCosts is different. We use publicly available government wage data — the same data economists and researchers use — to calculate what services should cost based on local labor rates, material costs, and project scope.
Our Data Pipeline
- BLS OEWS Data — Occupational wages for 800+ metro areas, updated annually
- Census ACS — Housing characteristics and regional economic context
- BLS CPI — Consumer Price Index for regional cost adjustments
- DOE EIA — Energy cost data for HVAC-related estimates
Editorial Independence
We are not affiliated with any contractor, home improvement retailer, or lead generation company. Our cost estimates are independent and unbiased. When we link to services, we clearly disclose affiliate relationships. Read our full editorial policy →
